What You Should Know About LPG

Liquefied Petroleum Gas is the cleanest fossil fuel available. Knowing how it behaves helps you use it safely and efficiently at home or work.

What is LPG?

LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas. It is a colourless, odourless gas that is highly flammable. A distinctive odour has been added to it so that leaks can be detected easily.

In Ghana, LPG is a mixture of 20% Propane and 80% Butane.

Heavier Than Air

LPG is heavier than air, which means it does not disperse easily. It should never be used or stored below ground level, as a leak in a confined space can cause suffocation.

Liquid LPG is about half the weight of water and floats on top of it.

Highly Flammable

LPG's flammability limits are 2% to 10% by volume in air. This means there should be no ignition sources near areas where LPG is stored or used.

When LPG burns, it combines with air to produce carbon dioxide and water vapour. However, poor ventilation can produce toxic carbon monoxide. Always open your kitchen windows when cooking.

Stored Under Pressure

LPG is stored in cylinders under approximately 7 bars (100 psi) as a liquid. It changes to gas when released into the atmosphere at room temperature.

One volume of liquid LPG produces approximately 250 volumes of gas when vaporized. That is why even a small amount of liquid creates a large volume of gas.

Produces Water Vapour

For every litre of liquid LPG burned, approximately over one litre of water vapour is produced. This is one reason why LPG is considered a clean-burning fuel compared to other fossil fuels.

Cold Burns & Material Effects

Liquid LPG freezes on contact with skin due to rapid heat loss from vaporization, resulting in cold burns. Handle cylinders with care.

LPG also acts as a solvent on certain rubber compounds. Hoses used for LPG must be made of special resistant materials to prevent reaction.

"Empty" Cylinders Are Dangerous

An 'empty' cylinder is NOT truly empty. There is always a residual amount of gas inside that can ignite and produce an explosion. Never tamper with or attempt to refill cylinders yourself. Only buy from authorized dealers.
